Laser Resurfacing

Sun exposure, smiling and aging all contribute to the development of wrinkles. Wrinkles and fine lines alter your appearance and can make you appear tired, sad or older than your actual age. Laser Resurfacing with a CO2 laser can be used to vaporize and remove the surface layers of your skin. As a new surface layer of cells form to heal your skin, it will become smoother, tighter and more youthful in appearance.

Advantages of Laser Resurfacing

The advantages of laser resurfacing over other resurfacing treatments such as dermabrasion are better precision, more uniformity, minimal bleeding and less post-operative discomfort.

The CO2 laser can be used to treat the whole face or selected areas such as eyelids or lips. Laser resurfacing surgery can also be done in conjunction with other procedures such as eyelid enhancement or a face lift. Although it will not stop the aging process, laser resurfacing surgery can improve your appearance and increase your self-confidence.

Is Laser Resurfacing Right For You?

Your plastic surgeon will evaluate your skin characteristics and recommend the proper treatment. If you have fair, healthy and non-oily skin, you are the ideal patient for skin resurfacing. Resurfacing is not recommended if you have olive, brown or black skin because the risks for pigmentation changes are very high. This procedure is also contraindicated if you have been taking Accutane during the past 12-18 months or have a risk of developing Keloid-like scars.

Procedure Preparation

In preparation for laser resurfacing a patient may need to undergo pre-operative skin care treatments to prepare the skin, reduce complications, accelerate healing time and obtain the best possible results.

Recovery

The depth of the resurfacing will determine the recovery period, as superficial laser resurfacing will heal more quickly. After the procedure, you will experience mild swelling and discomfort, which can be alleviated with cold compresses and pain medication. A crust may form over the treated areas which will subside after 10 days, but redness may remain for several weeks. Your plastic surgeon will show you how to gently wash and care for your healing skin. Proper skin care and sun protection will be advised after healing is completed.
